Children’s Discovery Museum

Mission Statement

The interactive exhibits and hands-on programs of the Children’s Discovery Museum ignite curiosity and celebrate learning through play.

Population Served: Our work within the museum reaches children 6 months to 8 years of age, as well as their families and caregivers. We welcome school groups, summer youth programs and other organizations serving this age range of children into the museum.

Our History: In 1984, Augusta’s Julie O’Brien incorporated her idea of a Children’s Discovery Museum (CDM) in the state Capitol. She started out with travelling exhibits, hosting the first Discovery Day at the Farrington School in 1990. In 1991, it was decided that a permanent home needed to be found for CDM. After many hours of volunteer work, the Children’s Discovery Museum opened its door at 265 Water Street, Augusta on August 1st, 1992. CDM was a wonderful addition to Augusta. In 1994, it was the recipient of the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award. A Capital Campaign in 1995 allowed the museum to double its exhibit space; more exhibit space and offices were added in 2000.
In February of 2006, CDM closed to make major renovations and re-opened one year later with modernized and new exhibits. After much deliberation, the Board of Directors decides CDM needed to move. The Water Street location was closed October 2009 and CDM reopened on November 7th, 2009 in its brand new home at 171 Capitol Street in Augusta

Big Changes on the Horizon! In the summer of 2016, the Children’s Discovery Museum Board of Directors decided it was time for the museum to expand and relocate. The new location will be in Waterville, Maine, just 25min north of our current location, and is slated to open in 2020. This new location will include a much larger space, brand new exhibits and a new lineup of programs. In the meantime, the museum will continue to operate in its current location, so we hope you’ll stop by!

He wanted to create a whitewater rafting trip that everyone would remember, from the first minute they arrived at Magic Falls until they left. This is probably the reason Magic Falls has had so much success!

Quaker Hill Disc Golf

Quaker Hill Disc Golf is a 21 hole, 5,180 foot, par 70 disc golf course (or shorter 18 hole, 4,480, par 60 “classic” layout). There is a mix of field and woods holes with Mach 5 triple chain targets (baskets). Check out our course map (http://quakerhilldiscgolf.com/images/course/course_map_Quaker_2019.pdf) and scorecard (http://quakerhilldiscgolf.com/images/golf/Scorecard041519.pdf) for detailed hole information . We have a well stocked pro-shop, clubhouse, gravel parking area, and toilet facilities.

Course fees are: $6.00 for all day and $1.00 each for disc rentals. Kids 12 and under play free.

Hours: We are open every day, all year, from 8:00 am to sunset.

We have an honor box if the pro-shop is unattended.

If you are new to the sport, you might be asking “What is disc golf?” It is a reasonably priced outdoor sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and athletic abilities. The idea is similar to traditional golf. You begin at a designated “tee” area (concrete pad), throw a disc (similar to a Frisbee ™) at a specially designed basket, and count the number of throws it takes to get there. Record the number of throws for that hole on your scorecard and move on to the next hole. At the end of 21 holes, add up your score and see how you compare to “par”, your competition, or your previous best score.

Disc golf can be played with one all purpose disc ($10.00 to $20.00) or you can carry a bag full of specialized drivers, putters, approach, rollers, hyzers, etc. as you become more experienced. You can play casual games or participate in league and/or tournament play.

Redington Museum

The Redington Museum is housed in a handsome two story home built in 1814 by pioneer Waterville settler Asa Redington, a veteran of three enlistments in the Revolutionary War and a member of George Washington’s elite Honor Guard. After the revolution he developed the water rights at Ticonic Falls and with his sons Samuel and William established a thriving flour mill on the banks of the Kennebec River. The father of six sons and three daughters, Asa built this substantial home for his son William. Fashioned of great hewn timbers, all hand pegged, it still features the original spiral staircase, fireplaces with period woodwork, and floors of wide pumpkin pine. The newel post in the entrance exhibits the “contractor’s peace stone,” a small smooth polished stone signifying in Colonial times that the project had been completed to both the owner’s and builder’s satisfaction. Today five rooms are furnished with antiques of the late 18th and early 19th centuries from the Redington and Heath families, the family of pioneer attorney Timothy Boutelle, and from other early local families. The house has been open to the public as a museum since 1927 and was entered in the National Register of Historic Places.

Waterville Creates!

Waterville Creates! promotes, supports, and grows our community‘s arts and cultural assets in order to strengthen Waterville as a vibrant creative center, increase access to creative opportunities for residents and visitors, and advance community and economic development goals.

In 2014, Waterville Creates! was established under the existing Waterville Regional Arts and Community Center (WRACC). Since that time, Waterville Creates! (WC!) has served as the primary coordinating entity for arts and cultural programming in Waterville by working directly with the Colby College Museum of Art, Maine Film Center, Waterville Public Library, Waterville Opera House, and Common Street Arts (CSA) to strengthen partnerships, expand collaborative programming, and launch new marketing initiatives.

Through the generous support of the Harold Alfond Foundation, WC! has also been able to increase collaborative partnerships with the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce, City of Waterville, Colby College, Thomas College, Kennebec Valley Community College, MaineGeneral and Inland hospitals, and area businesses. Additionally, this support has provided unique opportunities to foster partnerships through the creation of new initiatives such as the Partner Incentive Grant program that incentivizes and supports increased collaborative ventures like the Waterville Rocks! Summer Concert Series. This grant program has allowed for broader and more inclusive programming that has a profound impact on the cultural footprint within the community.
