Though our crop of Maine wild ice has been a bit lacking this year, come to Waterville Historical Society this Saturday, March 9, for a history talk about ice harvesting back in the day when ice was a vital and very profitable product. Maine's ice business at its peak was more than California's gold production. Who knew frozen water could bring in more wealth than gold? Before refrigeration, ice was incredibly important in a number of ways. Our ice was used locally and much of Maine's ice was shipped all over the world. Come see ice harvesting tools, view some wonderful images of ice houses, harvesting with horses, and several photos of the many people who worked the frozen gold on the Kennebec and Sebasticook Rivers.
